TWO SENSE TUESDAYS #4...Co-sleeping Debate?
Being a new mother I seem to get a lot of advice, which can be helpful, but is also very frustrating when it's from people who are insistent that their way is the BEST way. I also get advice (because I'm an adoptive mother) from those who think that my son is just a stand-in until I get "the real thing." Each week I will post a new question. I'd love it if you'd play along and offer us new mothers your pearls of wisdom.
HERE IS THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ON CO-SLEEPING?

Homeschool or Public
Shelly wrote a post titled WHY HOMESCHOOLING WORKS and she also wrote TEACHERS ARE NOT BROKEN. These two posts were like a breath of fresh air to me.Shelly writes, "Men and women work very hard in college to train. They have high hopes of becoming the teacher kids enjoy. They want to teach with their own personality, in their own time-frame and with the ability God instilled in them. What they find when they arrive on the job are rules, stipulations, road blocks and denial. They must force the kids to know the material "on time" for the test. They must force parents to teach at home. They must force families to push their children beyond their capabilities at times so the child is not behind. The joy is stripped of teachers in such a way that it is very hard to pass the joy of learning on to their classroom full of students."
Today is the first day back with my students. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be spending the next 3 weeks doing the SBA's, New Mexico's standardized testing. To put it bluntly....IT SUCKS! Everything comes to a screeching halt while we're doing these tests. All the extra programs, like P.E., art, computer lab, etc. are cancelled because we use all available teachers. Administrators are so stresses about doing well on these tests that they have passed this stress onto the teachers and we feel compelled to teach a certain way and cover a certain amount of material, no matter whether the children are getting it or not.
How do these tests tell you whether I am a good teacher or not? I know you have to evaluate me, but really!?! Now, what about coming in, unannounced, on any given day? That will give you a better picture of my teaching ability. Whomever designed these tests needs their head examined! Why would you put a question on a test asking a kid in New Mexico (remember now...we are landlocked)...about a YACHT! I've taught for 19 years and 95% of my students pronounce this word: y (as in the spanish work "ya")...a (as in "at")...ch (as in "church")...t (as in "Tom")! Don't even get me started...I could go on and on.....
My other point: How does one test or set of tests tell you all the things your child knows or their true ability level? Many students have a fear of tests, don't eat breakfast most of the time, don't care, or have a different learning style. I know tests are a given and children need to learn to deal, but aren't the elementary years when I should be helping them overcome these fears, figure out how they learn best and giving them a love of learning. These tests just freak the children out.
No Child Left Behind is a crock of @#$% and so is standardized testing. I refuse to put more stress on these 10 year olds then they already have. During testing, I bring in snacks every morning, suspend homework, do a lot of art projects and tell them to do the best they can.
Until the public school system gets a major overhaul, keep homeschooling your kids. You're the best teacher they could ever have.

Answering Questions
Being that public school's number one priority is the BIG TEST (SBA for New Mexico) at the end of the year, we are always practicing how to write fully developed answers to questions.
ACE is the anacronym that we use with the kids.
A, means to answer the question, C, means to cite where you found the answer and E, means to expand on your answer. They have to use this method for all comprehension questions in literacy, science and social studies.

Grilling Goodness #6

Every week Tina at Golden Goodness posts an 8 question MeMe. Here are this week's questions and my answers.
1. Do you prefer to write with pen or pencil? I prefer a pen unless I'm doing math and then I have to use a pencil.
2. What was off limits to you growing up that you do all the time now? Driving....I didn't get my license until I was 18. That was the house rule because Dad didn't want to have to put any of us on his insurance. My oldest brother went to the Air Force Academy and back then they didn't allow cars on campus, so he didn't bother to get one. He knew how to fly an F-111 Fighter Jet, before he could drive a car.
3. What is the age difference between you and your spouse? I am 1 year and 11 days older.
4. Did you hurt yourself in anyway this week? I constantly bang my elbows into my hip bones.
5. Do you like wallpaper enough to hang it in your home? I hate wallpaper. Too expensive, time consuming and messy. Painting is a lot more fun to do.
6. What do you need to do that you've been putting off? Clean my sewing room, wash the windows and iron....do you see a theme developing here....not a domestic diva.
7. What did you do this week that you wish you hadn't? Walked the dog outside on a cold, windy day. Now I think he has another ear infection. We have an appointment with the vet on Tuesday.
8. Did anything keep you up late this week? MY SON! I love him though!
Adoption...Update!

We got our post-placement paperwork in the mail yesterday, with a copy of the letter the agency sent to the court saying that they feel we are the best family for Samuel. We are finally in the home stretch! Our lawyer says we should have a court date by the end of April! WAHOO!
We also got a call from our CW saying that "K's" insurance covered most of her hospital stay, except for $1668.00. We knew we'd have to cover any medical bills that her insurance didn't, so we took it on the chin and wrote the check.
Then a day later when our lawyer was looking through all the paperwork, he suggested we ask the agency why the $1668.00 couldn't come out of the birthmother expense fee, which we had already paid. I don't know if I've told you, but "K" lives with her parents, in our city and her insurance covered most of her bills, so she didn't have any birthmother fees, even though we paid $4800 to the agency to cover anything that might come up (The rest is put in a pool for those who need help with their fees and we're ok with that.). So, I called them and sure enough, since "K" didn't have fees, they are shredding our check for $1668.00. Yippee! Having a lawyer is so cool! God is so good!

Is this really necessary.....
Albuquerque is considering a ban on texting while driving. Really people...do you need someone to tell you that this....
...is dangerous while doing this....

The people who need this ban to know it's not safe, are also the people who need warnings about not drinking bleach, not putting plastic bags over their heads and not putting paperclips in electrical outlets.

I found this post idea on The Mazza's Munchkins blog and I thought I'd steal borrow it.

THIS SHOULD MAKE YOU ANGRY
To all my adoption, and infertility friends, I debated about posting about this at all because I don't want anyone to think the drivel this person posts is worth their time. On the other hand, I want others to know this garbage is out there. Check out these four sites and make your OUTRAGE know! This person obviously has no idea what he's talking about and he's painting the entire global community with the same distorted brush!!! UGGGHHH!IVF-NEWBORNS-AT-RISK
