TIME CARD MAY 21-31

I am keeping track of how many hours I work during this school year. My contract only pays me to work 183 days a year, from 7:30-2:30 (that is 1189.5 hours in total). We are not told we have to work extra hours, but there is no way I could plan, correct papers, make copies, make phone calls, etc., just working to contract. Usually I arrive at school by 6:15 a.m. and leave around 3:15 p.m. Then when Samuel is in bed for the night, I do at least another couple hours of work. I also take stuff home on the weekends.

This week I worked 47.25 hours.

Total to date: 1771.5 hours hours. I have now worked 582 hours for free!

May 31st was my last day of school, so this will be my last post on my TIME CARD for the year. The 582 hours that I worked for free totals 89 extra days or about $11,000.

Tracey, While ive cringed a little inside each time you posted your "free hours", I love that you kept track and posted this. I think its important for people to see real numbers and understand the number of hours the job requires. It stinks that you cant ask for that $11,000 :) I wouldnt even want to know how many free hours/days/weeks/MONTHS you have given through all your years of teaching!

Hi Tracey,
I was curious about the #s (go figure!) so I was trying to sort them out. Based on what you posted, $11,000/582 hours is $18.90/hr. This rate times the 1189 paid hrs is $22,472.50, which sounds VERY low. I looked up the average teacher salary for NM--$41,637 at http://teacherportal.com/salary/New-Mexico-teacher-salary . So either you are underestimating the value of your free time, or you are working for far below average salary. I don't expect this to be posted, but was just curious and thought I'd share my findings.
