Being a new mother I seem to get a lot of advice, which can be helpful, but is also very frustrating when it's from people who are insistent that their way is the BEST way. I also get advice (because I'm an adoptive mother) from those who think that my son is just a stand-in until I get "the real thing." Each week I will post a new question. I'd love it if you'd play along and offer us new mothers your pearls of wisdom.

DOES YOUR CHILD GET AN ALLOWANCE? WHY OR WHY NOT?

Love this one. Dave and I were just talking about this after listening to Dave Ramsey talk about it. He calls it commission by the way.
We decided that when Isabel is school age we'll start an allowance. Not sure how much it will be. But she'll get it for doing things around the house. And we'll teach her to tithe and hopefully save as well. It will teach her that she has to work for things and that everything is not just given to her.
We're just starting that at age 5. We have a chore chart consisting of making bed, brushing hair, brushing teeth, get dressed, clothes in laundry, and clearing dishes. I drew pictures for each of the tasks, and they truly seem to enjoy referring to it to check their progress in the morning. They get 50 cents a week. My goal is to have them be self sufficient by the time they are leaving home, so as they take a bigger role in the household, we'll increase it.
