I WONDER

The problem that I see is my area is that kids are "passing" in otherwards the good grades have been faked. My son got good grades in math for putting his pencil to the paper and not because he understood what was taught. There were another class or two where he didn't do the work and major project and got a passing grade. He is special needs and stuggles with learning. It doesn't seem until high school that students just keep getting passed along and then its like no credits you don't graduate. It makes sense but its not what the earlier grades are teaching them. One teacher told me that the district wouldn't all any student to be held back in grades.

I have no authority to hold a student back!

That isn't right. Teachers and parents are the best judges if children need another year in a grade.

And now the governor of NM is basing 50% of my pay on how well the kids do on the standardized tests...

Except in very few cases....social promotion is crap...if you can't meet the grades...you shouldn't pass.

An interesting viewpoint! I'm a preschool special ed teacher and I agree that kids are passed on to the next grade when they aren't ready. I also wish that the "bad" teachers would be more easily gotten rid of! The "good" teachers get hosed....

I agree. Its not the real world. I am sorry about the pay thing. Its not right. I think the way schools are being ran is doing a huge diservice to the students.
