I HAD TO PUT IT DOWN

The beginning of the book brought back a lot of memories from my teenage years: feeling left out, not sure who I was, not fitting in. Then as Alice descends into drug addiction it got REALLY, REALLY depressing! I was depressed as a teenager, but NEVER like that and NEVER resorted to drugs or running away. I have actually stopped reading it because it was bumming me out. I have never even tried drugs...not even marijuana, because the losing control part scared me and kept me away from it. Maybe I'll pick it up again later, but for now Alice will have to sit on the shelf by herself.

My teacher read that to us in story time...IN THE 4TH GRADE! I'm sure she edited heavily. But we're progressive like that here in California, at least down in the LA suburbs. I don't think that'd fly up here in Tollhouse, though!

This book haunted me as a teen and is the reason that I never tried hard drugs. I made my daughter read it for the very same reason hoping she wouldn't try them either. Between that and God, we had success!

I read that book as a teenager and it is one of the reasons why I never did any "hard" drugs. The book scared me straight.

Tracy,
I believe you posted a while back about Sarah's Key so I read it and LOVED it!! Thanks for the good recommendation!

Wow! What an impacting book! I may have to look into it and have my kids read it (when I finally get one and he/she grows up). I can't imagine being read that book in 4th grade. That would never fly anywhere in TX ;-)
