TWO SENSE TUESDAYS #4...Co-sleeping Debate?

Being a new mother I seem to get a lot of advice, which can be helpful, but is also very frustrating when it's from people who are insistent that their way is the BEST way. I also get advice (because I'm an adoptive mother) from those who think that my son is just a stand-in until I get "the real thing."

Each week I will post a new question. I'd love it if you'd play along and offer us new mothers your pearls of wisdom.

HERE IS THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:

WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ON CO-SLEEPING?

Co-sleeping would not work for us. I am a very light sleeper and even the few months that I had my kids in our room in the bassinet, I got very little sleep (even less than a normal new mom). I was awake with every little peep and in my zealousness to check on the baby, I would wake up the baby. Putting the baby in his own room helped both of us get better sleep (I did not mention my husband because he could sleep through a tornado in our house so co-sleeping would not bother him at all).

I was not a fan of co-sleeping until Megan (how a child can change things!). Honestly, the only way she would sleep those first few months was if she was touching us. But, just a few short months later she slept better by herself than with us (she's SO active in her sleep!). However, with our sleep problems, if she would sleep through the night b/c she was sleeping with us, I'd do it in a heartbeat just so we could all sleep better. But, she won't and so we don't, which is honestly find with us.

We only had Andrew actually in the bed with us 2 or 3 times and only by necessity when he was sick and wouldn't sleep without mommy right there. I couldn't sleep, but it was the only way the poor kid could get some rest.

For the first 3 months, we had him in him a bassinet (the Mini ArmsReach Co-Sleeper) by the bed. I kept his nighttime bottles in a mini-fridge on the bedside table, so feeding was super easy. I would wake up as soon as he started whimpering and had the cold bottle in his mouth before he even woke up. No more crying during the night! I even had a changing table set up at the foot of the bed so that I could change his diaper during the night without ever having to get out of bed.

When he no longer needed to feed more than once or twice at night, we moved him to his crib. We all slept much better that way.

Thank you for posing questions like this, I eat up the answers!! We've waited so long for our little miracle, I have a hard time believing I'll EVER want him to leave my side! :)

We have a cradle in our room and I'm hoping we'll be able to sleep with him in it...I'd really like to have baby boy close for awhile...
