Mom, tell the story of the day I was born.....
"K" called us at 1:15 A.M...."It's time!" I called a sub, called my Dad to let the dog out later that morning, grabbed a few last minute things, put clothes on and we were at the hospital by 2:30 A.M.
When we got to the hospital, we parked in front and had to walk all around the building to EMERGENCY to find a door unlocked. Who knew they locked the doors at night!?!
When we walked in the room, "K's" mom gave me a big hug and we cried together. She and I have had a bond ever since we met. She was also unable to have children and adopted "K."
"K's" aunt and uncle were also there...."K" has a large, very supportive family!
"K's" water had broken and she was already having contractions that were 2 minutes apart, but she wasn't dilated at all. There was only one anesthesiologist on call and he was in surgery with another woman having a C-section. So, in it's place they gave "K" Fentinol to dampen the pain a little.
We spent the next 5 hours chatting, crying, holding her hand through contractions, praying and doing a lot of waiting. Finally, around 7:30 A.M. the anesthesiologist gave "K" an epidural and she was finally able to sleep. At this point she was 5 cm. Her parents left to grab a quick bite to eat and then we ran out too and spent breakfast making phone calls.
Around 10 A.M. she was fully dilated and the mid-wife could feel the head.
They let the epideral do the hard part of getting him down into the canal. Then they let the drug subside some so "K" would have the urge to push and then around 11:00 A.M. she was finally ready.
All the men RAN FOR THE EXITS and the WOMEN took over.
"K" had her aunt helping to push up on her back, her mom and I were each holding a leg (and crying) and the midwife was in the "middle."
"K" did great, honestly, but the closer Sam got to the opening...the more tired she became and the wider she opened, the more she screamed. An hour and 15 minutes later, lots of crying, 2 major expletives, and MUCH ENCOURAGING....SAM popped into the world.
The umbilical cord was wrapped around his throat twice, but it was never noticed because his heart rate was good all the way through. They took that off, "K's" mom cut the cord and they took him to the warming tray. They started rubbing and massaging him. He let out a few good cries, but then they turned into short cries, which meant he had a lot of "stuff" blocking his air way.
They put a long tube down this throat and used the bulb syringe to get out a lot of it. He was slightly blue when he came out, but that quickly turned to pink.
Sam was still having trouble getting good deep breaths, so they ended up transporting him down to the NICU and giving him oxygen. They don't want him to aspirate, so they are feeding him intravenously right now. They've done a blood test to see if he has an infection, but they won't know for 48 hours.
Best case scenario, he's fine in 48 hours and we can take him home on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. If he has an infection, they will have to treat it with antibiotics and he'll have to stay for anywhere from one to two weeks.
Pray that all goes well and our "little man" is fine. Welcome to the world, Samuel!

You know when I saw your note yesterday morning I began praying for his safe arrival. A friend of our family recently lost the baby they were adopting b/c the cord was around his neck. Unfortunately, they didn't realize it until it was too late. I did NOT want that to happen to precious Samuel.
I'm so glad he arrived safe!!!
I'm all covered in goose pimples here, Tracey! Shannon and I are SO excited for you and Richard.
I will be praying for Samuel's health...and that you can take that precious boy home this week!
(((BIG HUGS!)))
God Bless,
Amy:)

That's why in Little House on the Prairie they have the men boil the water. Get them out of the way and let the women do the work. I am so happy for you guys and happy that you were able to be a part of it. I will be praying for all of you and especially K as she takes the next steps. What a blessing she is.

Congrats. He is adorable.
Prayers for you and your new precious boy!
Great birth story! But, I think when you actually tell Samuel this story you'll find yourself leaving out the part about "the wider she opened...the more she screamed..." or else you'll be having some early sex ed conversations? :) :) :)
