FIRST DAY OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
I had a great first day of school. Only 4 of my 21 students were absent. I've learned that two of these have had consistent attendance problems over the years. One girl's mother called me and told me she had to take her daughter to a nutritionist. They have given her 1 month to get her weight up or they are sending her to a clinic for eating disorders in Arizona. I was also excited because all but 2 children remembered to bring their supplies. I have 2 girls in gifted and 1 in special education. I'm not sure yet how many will need ESL (English as a Second Language) classes yet. I was very excited to see so many parents come by with their kids. Usually, I just have the kids walk in and I don't get to meet the parents until open house or the first parent conference, at the end of October.
They are always so quiet on the first day. I did bring my camera, but I was so wrapped up and busy I forgot to take pictures. I had a lot of eager hand raising and shy smiles, so I am hopeful their eagerness continues. It takes me a long time to remember names, but I think I already know about 13. There's Victoria, Neida, Kimberly, Orlando, Ashley, Anastacia, Eimy, Isidro, Cesar, Jasmine, Robert, Ruban and John. It's my goal, by the end of the week, to know them all. I'm looking forward to day number 2.
Here are a few of my favorite quotes about education:
It'll be a great day when education gets all the money it wants and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy bombers. ~Author unknown
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. ~Attributed to both Andy McIntyre and Derek Bok
The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives. ~Robert Maynard Hutchins
A child educated only at school is an uneducated child. ~George Santayana

I'm glad you had such a wonderful first day, and great job with the names! That is not easy to do.
I love the quotes too; they are all so true!
God Bless,
Amy:)
Only 21 kids in your class!? OMG! My son's fifth grade class had 35 last year and my other son's class had 29.
Glad you had a good first day.
Glad your first day went well. That is a lot of different names.
I remember all the excitement and anxiety of getting a new school year under way. All the excitement of the new lives you get to touch and influence. I am thankful these students have a godly women for a teacher and I know that God will honor all your efforts with them!! I am thankful that you have them and your mission of teaching to keep you busy as you wait on that baby! I know it is with a renewed hope and joy that you enter this school year, knowing what is waiting for you come Christmas break!!!!
Blessings to you!
