MAKING CHILDREN MIND......an introduction
I've started reading this book and I'm hooked. On the back of the book it says:
"If anyone understands why children behave the way they do it's psychologist and best selling author Dr. Kevin Leman. Equipping you with seven principles of Reality Discipline this father of five shows you how to:
* get kids to do what you want them to do
* foil finicky eaters, turn off temper tantrums and minimize sibling rivalries
* use authority and decisiveness to show your kids you're not a pushover
* know when to take the little buzzards by the beak
* set suitable allowances, curfews and privileges
* put yourself back in the driver's seat
I started reading Chapter #1 and I was INSPIRED....if I like this book already, then others would like it too...let's pass it along. So, as I read I'll be sharing it with you.
I like Dr. Leman's no nonsense, no excuses approach to being a parent. He says, "Step up to the plate and be a parent. Decide that your family is your most important calling and commit yourself to it. Take the job of caring for your kids. It won't be easy. It won't always be fun. But it will be worth it."
He calls his way of parenting, "reality discipline." He describes it as this: "a consistent, decisive and respectful way for parents to love and discipline their children."
Reality discipline is inspired by scripture and has its basis in Ephesians 6:1-4, which says:
Children, obey your parents; this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you. Honor your father and mother. This is the first of God's Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: that if you honor your father and mother, your will be a long life, full of blessings. And now a word to your parents. Don't keep on scolding and nagging your children, making them angry and resentful. Rather, bring them up with the loving discipline the Lord himself approves, with suggestions and godly advice.
If you've read this book already or are reading it now, come along for the journey and share your thoughts.
