FAVORITE THINGS FRIDAY #6....New Mexico...Discover Old Town in Albuquerque

New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912. This is our state flag, the Zia symbol. We have two state languages, English and Spanish. Santa Fe is the capital and Albuquerque is the largest city. I've lived here for 18 years and this is one of my favorite places to be. I thought everyone would like to know the interesting places to see, in case you're all planning on coming to visit. We are a high desert state, which is much different then a low desert like Arizona. We are one of the "four corner states," and the sun sets are amazing here. The Sandia Mountains are younger then the Appalachians back east, but they are higher. You may have heard of the Internatinal Balloon Fiesta we have every October. Last year there were over 700 hot air balloons from 70 countries that participated. It's a week long event with great food, crafts, and competitions.

There is so much to see and do in New Mexico, that I may have to write multiple posts about it (I can see you are very excited).

LET'S MAKE OLD TOWN, IN ALBUQUERQUE, OUR FIRST STOP!

This is San Felipe de Neri Church in Old Town. The area was established in 1706. This was the main part of Albuquerque until the 1880 when the railroad came through. The rose garden is beautiful.

There is also a sheltered walkway where a lot of Native American artisans gather to sell their handcrafted jewelry and pottery. There are also many galleries, boutiques and art studios.

The food is great in Albuquerque. There are a lot of great restaurants. The Margaritas are wonderful too! Be ready to answer the question, "Do you want red or green?" If you don't know the answer, ASK FOR IT ON THE SIDE or you may be sorry the next morning!

That's interesting. I've never thought of New Mexico as a place to go. I've never been there and never really gave "going there" a thought. But now you have me intrigued.

my future hubby proposed to me at the lovely little bed and breakfast (whose name escapes me now) there in old town. :)

i spent last summer interning at the IHS in Gallup, mainly as a way to make money to stock up on turquoise!
