I HAVE A QUESTION #2

In what ways will you treat (or have you treated) your children differently from the way you were treated? If you've already raised children and could do it again knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

My parents were more strict and conservative than many of my friends' parents. I think we are on the strict side of average as well, but not by very much! We have more structure for the girls, which I like. And there is more of a balance in child-rearing between both parents, which I LOVE. My girls will have a wonderful bond with their father that I think many dads miss out on. No burning issues that I wish I had as a "do-over", Thank God.

Good question.. For starters, I don't spank my kids. My parents were always hitting us with something. I don't make my older watch his younger brother. If I do, it's for a short trip to the store.. no hours and days of babysitting. I walk my son to his bus stop. I do not expose my kids to drug use. I take my kids to the dentists and dr's compared to where my Mom didn't. If my kids are sick, I don't leave them in the hospital alone.

My parents also spanked us or made us stand in the corner forever. We do time outs right now, and in the future if warranted we will take away privledges, games, etc. My mom was very controlling (she felt she needed to be as a single mom), moody and at times rather insensitive to a very sensitive child's feelings. I try very hard to just sit by and watch Jack instead of interfering all the time, and just intervene when he does something wrong that needs to be addressed. I try not to be moody with him but there are times I find myself with a short fuse and snippy with him which upsets me. I'm very aware of his feelings as he is just as sensitive as I was and still am, so I try to address things with him calmly and matter of fact rather than with disgust in my voice.
